Maths

Choose a subject:

Our aim at Heybridge is for all children to enjoy maths and become successful problem solvers. Our chosen curriculum, the Mathematics Mastery programme, supports children to develop a secure understanding of fundamental mathematical concepts, enabling them to apply their subject knowledge to a variety of contexts.

We have chosen this maths curriculum because:

  • it is EEF approved*
  • the best evidence-based subject pedagogy is visible in our classrooms
  • teachers are confident in their subject knowledge, and new teachers can slot in instantly
  • it enables our Maths lead to work with other Maths leads in TKAT to support our continual improvement and share best practice.

Mathematics Mastery is premised on a belief that all learners can enjoy and succeed in maths with a mission to empower and equip teachers to provide the learning experiences needed to achieve success for all.

The programme gives all pupils the opportunity to develop Conceptual Understanding, Language and Communication and Mathematical Thinking in every lesson in order to become confident problem solvers.

In every lesson, children will have opportunities to solve problems and represent different concepts by using concrete, pictorial and abstract approaches. They will have lots of opportunities to talk, learn and use precision vocabulary, explain and justify their mathematical thinking as they are taught to organise, compare, look for patterns and generalise.

Learning will be regularly revisited in regular Maths Meetings, designed to activate prior knowledge and enable students to know more and remember more.

The curriculum runs through Early Years to the end of Key Stage 2. You can read more about the Mathematics Mastery curriculum here.

*EEF research shows KS1 children gain an average 2 months' additional progress after 1 year of the programme
